Welcome to the Florida Department of Health in Jackson County.

Our team of dedicated professionals work to keep our citizens healthy by delivering high quality public health services. Our services include women’s health, nutrition, health education, immunizations, WIC, school health including dental care, communicable disease surveillance, investigation, and treatment, environmental public health, and public health preparedness and response.

Jana Barfield, MSN, RN, is a statewide public health nursing leader with more than 18 years of experience advancing clinical operations, workforce development, and system-wide performance for the Florida Department of Health. As the Statewide Nursing Director for the Office of County Health Systems, she oversaw public health practice and nursing across all county health departments, guiding clinical standards, supervising RN consultants, and integrating performance management into statewide operations. She also leads ESF‑8 Special Needs emergency response functions and contributes to major policy and protocol development efforts.

Jana holds a Master of Science in Nursing with a public health focus from Aspen University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida State University. She serves on multiple statewide committees and remains an active member of the Florida Nurses Association and the Nursing Action Coalition of Florida.

We strive to improve community health by engaging citizens in our offices and at public events in collaboration with community partners.
